2. Scope
This privacy policy applies to the Android app LarasMemo. It informs you in accordance with Art. 13 GDPR about the type, scope, purpose and legal basis of the processing of personal data within the app.
3. Core principle: local, no cloud
LarasMemo processes all data exclusively on your device:
- no user account,
- no cloud storage,
- no automatic upload of recordings, transcripts, search queries or exports,
- no external speech-to-text processing,
- no advertising,
- no in-app telemetry, analytics or crash reporting that links to a person,
- no tracking cookies or advertising IDs,
- no connections to social-media services or external analytics providers.
The app does not initiate any network connections on its own.
4. Data processed
LarasMemo processes the following data locally:
| Data category | Source | Storage location |
|---|---|---|
| Audio recordings (voice memos) | Microphone, via the MediaRecorder API triggered by your record action | IndexedDB inside the Android WebView (audio blob) |
| Transcripts | currently demo data and prepared records | IndexedDB |
| Title and metadata (duration, timestamp) | derived from your actions and the recording | IndexedDB |
| Search index / full-text search | generated locally from titles and transcripts | IndexedDB |
5. Recording voice memos
When you use the "voice memo" function, the app records audio through your device microphone. The Android permission android.permission.RECORD_AUDIO is required for this.
- Recording starts only after you actively select the record function, and only after you have granted the microphone permission.
- The app does not record in the background. Background recording via a native foreground service is not implemented in the current MVP.
- The browser-based recording via
MediaRecorderis not designed for continuous background recording.
You can revoke the microphone permission at any time in the Android system settings. Without microphone permission, the record function is unavailable; all other app functions (playback, search, export) remain usable.
Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR (performance of a contract — provision of the record function).
6. Local storage (Section 25 TDDDG)
Recordings, transcripts, titles and the search index are stored as blobs or records in the app's local database (IndexedDB). This storage is strictly necessary within the meaning of Section 25 (2) no. 2 TDDDG (German implementation of the ePrivacy Directive) so that the app can provide the service you have expressly requested (record, later playback, search, export). No separate consent is required for this.
Automatic Android system cloud backup is disabled (android:allowBackup="false").
Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR + Section 25 (2) no. 2 TDDDG.
7. Markdown export and sharing
The "Export" function creates a Markdown file containing your selected notes. The file is first prepared locally. Subsequent sharing via the Android share sheet (e.g. to an email app, a messenger or the cloud storage of your choice) is an action triggered by you. LarasMemo has no influence over how the receiving app handles the data — please consult the privacy policy of the respective receiving app.
In the in-app "Privacy / Data-Flow Log", the Markdown preparation is recorded as a local event; the actual send is recorded as an outbound event once the native phase is implemented.
Legal basis: Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR.
8. App permissions
- Microphone (
android.permission.RECORD_AUDIO): to record voice memos, exclusively on your active action. - No further sensitive permissions are currently requested. In particular, no
FOREGROUND_SERVICE*permissions are declared as long as the native background recording service does not exist.
9. Third-country transfers
LarasMemo does not initiate any network connections on its own. Therefore, there is no third-country transfer.
When you share a Markdown file via the Android share sheet, the data processing of the receiving app you choose is outside LarasMemo's control; the privacy policies of the respective receiving app and any third-country practices of that app apply there.
10. Legal bases at a glance
| Processing | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Microphone recording | Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR (contract performance) |
| Local storage in IndexedDB | Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR + Section 25 (2) no. 2 TDDDG |
| Search / export / playback | Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR |
| App function and security in general | Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR |
11. Storage duration
Locally stored data remains for as long as you keep it in the app. You can delete individual recordings or the entire dataset at any time within the app. Uninstalling the app permanently removes all stored data.
12. Your rights as a data subject
Under GDPR, you have the following rights:
- Access (Art. 15 GDPR)
- Rectification (Art. 16 GDPR)
- Erasure (Art. 17 GDPR)
- Restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR)
- Data portability (Art. 20 GDPR)
- Objection (Art. 21 GDPR)
- Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR)
Because LarasMemo does not transmit any personal data to LarasDesk, access and erasure requests for in-app content can only be fulfilled locally: delete individual records in the app, or clear app data in the Android system settings.

14. Changes to this policy
This policy may be amended when the app's functionality changes (e.g. when a native foreground service for background recording or an on-device Whisper transcription is added). The current version is available at the URL linked above.
